Judo Kids
Great judo starts young. Teaching kids has always been a core part of the SportJudo curriculum. We have over 40 kids regularly participating in our kids classes. Ages range from five years old to early teens. We maintain a safe, disciplined environment, but also make sure that our young children have fun. Our goals and priorities are:
- Maintain a safe training environment
- Teach proper Judo technique
- Instill a love for the sport of Judo
- Build confidence
- Develop strong, agile bodies
- Teach discipline and self-endeavor
- Have fun the judo way
Teaching Methods
As with the adult classes, our kids practice basic techniques, using drills that develop muscle memory. The teacher will demonstrate a throw or pin. The kids pair up to practice the technique. The partner cooperates, allowing each student to perfect the technique against a non-resisting partner. This builds the muscle memory. At the end of class, the kids have the opportunity to engage in live competion, known as randori. In randori, the students practice those techniques against each other while resisting the partner's techniques 100%. This combination of drilling and randori is the core of SportJudo's curriculum. In the JudoKids class, the balance between drills and live judo grappling is geared towards the attention spans and still-developing bodies of our young students.
The kids class is very active and everyone gets a good work out. Older youths who are engaged in middle school sports will find the work out challenging. Students are tested regularly and receive belt promotions. The criteria for promotion are:
- Ability to execute a select number of basic throws
- Ability to exectue a select number of basic judo pins
- Knowledge of the vocabulary, rules, and techniques of judo
- Regular attendance in class
- Participation in competitions
